Hardcover. After twenty-five years chasing killers in Portland, homicide detective Arlen Cowger thought retirement would bring peace. Instead, it brings him home.Back in Clarksville, Arkansas, Arlen inherits a stretch of wild land along the Mulberry River-twenty acres of forest near a place called Wolf Pen. With dreams of building an off-the-grid cabin and finally starting over, he imagines a life of solitude, healing, and simple freedom. But the Ozarks have other plans. When Arlen befriends Dane Linden, a local farmer, he's drawn into a haunting mystery: Dane's sister, Darla, vanished without a trace fifteen years ago. No suspects. No evidence. No answers. Just silence. The police gave up long ago. Arlen can't.With his seasoned instincts and a stubborn streak that earned him a reputation as a bulldog detective, Arlen begins unraveling the secrets Darla left behind-an abandoned phone, forgotten fingerprints, and a trail of men who once circled her life in unsettling ways. Each name he uncovers pulls him deeper into the shadows of a small town where old memories run deep and old dangers never died.As Arlen rebuilds his own life among the Arkansas hills, he must decide: can he solve the one case no one else could, or will Wolf Pen claim another ghost?Off the Grid is more than a cold-case mystery.
