They call it the "Gentle Giant" — and for good reason. The Green-Winged Macaw is the largest commonly kept macaw, and one of the sweetest.
At up to 90 cm from head to tail and weighing over a kilogram, the Green-Winged Macaw is a massive bird with an unexpectedly calm and affectionate temperament. While other large macaws are known for mood swings and aggression, the Green-Wing is often described as the most laid-back of the big macaws — a true gentle giant that bonds deeply with its owner.
But "gentle" doesn't mean "easy." A bird this large needs enormous space, a carefully planned diet, and an owner who understands that even a gentle macaw can deliver a crushing bite when frightened or hormonal.
Inside this guide, you'll discover:
Space requirements for a giant: minimum cage dimensions, flight room setups, and how to macaw-proof a home for a bird that can reach the top of any shelf
The Green-Wing temperament: why this species is calmer than Scarlets or Blue-and-Golds, and how to nurture that gentle personality without creating over-dependence
Bonding with the whole family: socialization techniques that prevent the common one-person attachment that leads to aggression toward other household members
Diet for a large macaw: higher caloric needs, the right balance of pellets, fresh foods, and nuts — and the critical role of calcium and vitamin A
Hormonal maturity: what to expect around age 5–7, and why Green-Wings handle this phase better than most macaws — but still need careful management
Health concerns specific to the species: proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), beak overgrowth, obesity risks, and finding an avian vet experienced with large macaws
Training a gentle giant: positive reinforcement methods adapted for a bird that responds best to patience and routine, not pressure
The 60-year commitment: long-term planning, including what happens to your macaw if you can no longer care for it
If you want the presence of a large macaw with the heart of a companion dog, the Green-Winged Macaw might be the perfect match. This book will show you exactly how to give it the life it deserves.
