Título: A Grammar of the English Language. in a ...
Editorial: William Cobbett,
Año de publicación: 1835
12mo., with only occasional and minimal offsetting; strongly bound in early nineteenth century half calf, gilt back, marbled boards, speckled edges, a very good, clean copy with good margins. Cobbett's 'Grammar' was published first in America (New York, 1817) whence the author had gone for the second time earlier that year. It was immediately successful and was several times reprinted there before Cobbett's return to the UK in 1819. 'The Lessons' were added in 1824. The 'Grammar' is a result of Cobbett's early fascination with literature. 'HGe developed an extraordinary capacity for literary cultivation. All his leisure was devoted to acquiring English grammar and to the study of the best English classics' (DNB). He was also the author of a speller in 1831. In this epistolary work, Cobbett shows his rhetorical skills by taking to task the efforts of earlier grammarians, including Blair, Lowth and Murray, whose prescriptions he criticises freely.
