God and Intelligence in Modern Philosophy, the first of the sixty-six total books Fulton J. Sheen wrote over the course of his storied career, is an extraordinary effort to consider the nature of God and how we can know Him. Sheen sets out, not to dwell in the past and delight in its wisdom, but to discover, in the light of the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, effective solutions to modern problems of philosophy and theology. In the thought of the Angelic Doctor, Sheen sees the perfect remedy for what ails the modern age: “Modern Idealism needs the complement of his realism; empiricism needs his transcendental principles; philosophical biologism his metaphysics; sociological morality his ethics; sentimentalism his theory of the intelligence; and the world needs the God he knew and loved and adored.”First published in 1925, God and Intelligence in Modern Philosophy is a testament to the sheer brilliance of Sheen’s intellect and to the immense clarity of his literary vision, but above all to the ardent fervor of his love for God.
