Paperback. In 336 BCE, Alexander the Great - the most powerful man in the ancient world - travelled to Corinth to meet a homeless philosopher lying in the afternoon sun. He introduced himself. He offered the philosopher anything he wanted."Get out of my sunlight."That philosopher was Diogenes - history's most radical thinker, the man the Stoics learned from, the figure Marcus Aurelius called his ideal. For 2,400 years his ideas have been hiding in plain sight. This is the first book to bring them fully into modern life.Diogenes spent sixty years identifying why conventional goods - wealth, status, comfort, social approval - fail to deliver the contentment they promise. And he spent sixty years demonstrating, with his own life, what actually does. His central argument is simple and devastating: most of what we spend our lives chasing is counterfeit. The stamp looks real. The metal isn't there.Get Out of My Sunlight takes ten of Diogenes's core principles and translates each one into a practice you can apply today: How to audit the values you have never questionedWhy voluntary simplicity is a form of invulnerabilityThe case for radical honesty - and why most people can't stomach itHow to use chosen discomfort as a philosophical toolWhat it actually means to live according to natureHow to use the fact of death as the clearest lens for your lifeThis is not a book about living in a jar. It is a book about finding out what is actually there when you check the metal - and then arranging your life around it. This item is printed on demand. In 336 BCE, Alexander the Great - the most powerful man in the ancient world - travelled to Corinth to meet a homeless philosopher lying in the afternoon sun. He introduced himself. He offered the philosopher anything he wanted.
"Get out of my sunlight."
That philosopher was Diogenes - history's most radical thinker, the man the Stoics learned from, the figure Marcus Aurelius called his ideal. For 2,400 years his ideas have been hiding in plain sight. This is the first book to bring them fully into modern life.
Diogenes spent sixty years identifying why conventional goods - wealth, status, comfort, social approval - fail to deliver the contentment they promise. And he spent sixty years demonstrating, with his own life, what actually does. His central argument is simple and devastating: most of what we spend our lives chasing is counterfeit. The stamp looks real. The metal isn't there.
Get Out of My Sunlight takes ten of Diogenes's core principles and translates each one into a practice you can apply today:
- How to audit the values you have never questioned
- Why voluntary simplicity is a form of invulnerability
- The case for radical honesty - and why most people can't stomach it
- How to use chosen discomfort as a philosophical tool
- What it actually means to live according to nature
- How to use the fact of death as the clearest lens for your life
This is not a book about living in a jar. It is a book about finding out what is actually there when you check the metal - and then arranging your life around it.
