The text presents a practical framework for understanding the Arkansas River’s sections, its alluvial plain, and the rocky country that borders it. It blends field observations with clear explanations of how geologic forces have sculpted cliffs, synclinal and anticlinal axes, coal seams, and unexpected rock rapports along the waterway. Along the way, readers gain a sense of the scale, the scenery, and the practical implications for settlement and travel.
- Learn how alluvial deposits form and shift with floods, and what this means for land use.
- See how dramatic river bends create pockets of forest, farms, and ancient channels that track a river’s memory.
- Discover notable rock formations, from slate and sandstone to coal beds and indurated rocks, and what they reveal about the region’s geology.
- Get a sense of the landscape, from Big Rock and Mammelle to the Palisades and Magazine Mountain, through descriptive terrain imagery.
Ideal for readers curious about the Arkansas region, its geology, and the ways rivers carve and preserve history through rock and soil.

Reseña del editor
IN presenting myself before this body with a simple bird's-eye view of one of the greatest tributaries of the Father of Waters, I feel a diffidence, arising from the paucity of facts which have fallen under my notice, but I am urged to proceed, in consequence of the very limited and imperfect information which I had been able to ac quire from books, respecting this unknown region. Arkansas is a vast state, embracing within its borders a varied surface of different geological characters. It is usually the case, that wherever the peo ple are ignorant of the wealth beneath and around them, two classes are found, the one doubters, the other possessed of extravagant Opin ions respecting the fancied value of the mineralogical sources they possess. So I found it in this interesting region.
The Arkansas river is a much more important tributary than is generally imagined, rising amidst the Rocky Mountains, bringing the melted snows and rains, from Pike's Peak and the Spanish Peaks, in an elevated region which furnish streams that run in almost every direction, it receives meny tributaries of more or less consequence, as it sweeps through New Mexico and the Indian Territory, entering this State on its western border at Fort Smith, it passes diagonally toward the south-east, to its confluence with the Mississippi at N apo leon. During this progress it has run over a distance of 2500 miles The supply of atmospheric moisture in the Great Western Desert being'cut off by the height of the Rocky Mountains, we do not find the size of this stream commensurate with its length it is however, navigable during a portion of the year, for a distance of 700 miles by steamboats.

Descripción de la tienda
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
