Why did an entire generation of young Jews turn away from tradition—and how can they be brought back?

A century ago, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, one of the most visionary Jewish thinkers of the modern era, confronted a crisis that still echoes today: the widening divide between the older guardians of tradition and the younger seekers drawn to new ideas, revolutions, and spiritual restlessness.

In The Generation: An Annotated Translation of Rav Kook’s “HaDor,” readers encounter Rav Kook’s bold, compassionate, and remarkably contemporary answer. Far from condemning the youth of his time, he saw in them fierce moral passion, spiritual longing, and a hidden greatness waiting to be revealed.

This accessible new edition presents Rav Kook’s classic essay in clear English—accompanied by helpful notes that illuminate its historical setting, philosophical depth, and enduring relevance for our own age.

• Why the younger generation rebelled—and why their rebellion may reflect spiritual strength, not weakness.
• How modern ideologies disrupted Jewish life, and how Rav Kook interpreted these forces with empathy and hope.
• A practical vision for healing the rift between tradition and modernity, parents and children, past and future.
• Insights for educators, leaders, and seekers navigating the cultural upheavals of today.

Rav Kook’s message is both timeless and timely: when we learn to understand the soul of the new generation—its passion, idealism, creativity, and courage—we can guide it back to its deepest roots.

A classic vision of renewal, reconciliation, and spiritual leadership— translated and made accessible for the modern reader.

“HaDor is not merely an introductory essay; it is a foundational text for understanding Rav Kook’s approach to the many subjects and grave challenges he addressed.”

— Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, Chief Rabbi of Ramat Gan
