The country ranks second in terms of fruit production after China with an annual production of nearly 50 million tons from an area of about 4.0 million hectares. However we are short in supplying the required quantity of fruits as per dietary recommendation for our increasing population. The major reason for non availability of required quantity of fruits is lack of sufficient production from the existing area under cultivation and post harvest management in different fruit crops. The possible solution to mitigate the shortfall could be either increase in productivity with improved management practices and varieties of existing crops and post harvest handling techniques or increase in area under fruit production. In the present book the information pertaining to importance and uses taxonomy plant genetic resources and varieties plant propagation and nursery management production technologies and processing and value addition techniques of 27 such lesser known tropical and subtropical fruits of the country has been compiled. The updated information on these crops have been reviewed and suitably placed with the help of tables and figures. The long working experience in these crops has enable to collate and synthesize the useful informations for the better understanding. The main purpose of writing this book is to assemble information on various aspects of these underutilized and lesser known fruit crops in order to identify the constraints and research gaps to work upon and develop sustainable technology for the future so that these crops can find place in Indian horticultural scenario and help to nutrition security and poverty elevation programmes of the country.
