The prairie knows your name. Do not answer when it calls.
Forty-three souls leave Independence for Oregon, carrying everything they need to begin again. Captain Cliff Mercer trusts discipline to keep them alive. His scout, Samuel Boone, knows there are dangers no rifle can stop.
Beyond the campfires, barefoot figures stand motionless in the dark. Familiar voices call from empty grass. Footprints circle the wagons-but something is wrong with the way they face.
Then people begin to disappear.
And those left behind begin to forget they ever existed.
For Abigail Mercer, each mile west brings another reason to doubt her memory-and another warning she cannot afford to ignore. When the company reaches Whisper Basin, an abandoned settlement offers shelter. But every path out leads back, and the journals beneath its church tell of travelers who learned how to survive the night without ever learning how to leave.
Outside, the watchers are placing stones beside the wagons.
By morning, every occupied wagon has one.
Except Abigail's.
Some things in the wilderness do not want to be found. They want you to acknowledge.
