Paperback. "As Between Friends" explores the intricate intellectual and personal relationships between three of the most influential figures in English literature: Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Charles Lamb. Through a careful examination of their private correspondence, Barbara Birkhoff reveals how these writers critiqued their own work and the work of one another, shaping the course of the Romantic movement. This study offers a rare glimpse into the collaborative spirit and the rigorous self-examination that defined their creative processes. Readers will find deep insights into the development of iconic poems and essays, as well as the candid, often vulnerable exchanges that sustained their long-lasting friendships. By focusing on the criticism found within their letters, the work highlights the intersection of personal affection and professional integrity. "As Between Friends" remains a valuable resource for those interested in the Romantic period, the art of literary letter-writing, and the evolution of 19th-century critical thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
