Descripción:

This is "The Forlorn Demon : Didactic and Critical Essays" by famous literary critic Allen Tate, who at one time held the Chair of Poetry at the Library of Congress. the book was published in 1953 by Regnery; this is the second printing. the book is previously owned, but remains clean and presentable (there is one instance of a small marginal inked bracket). ************************************************** From the books dust-jacket blurb : "This is a collection of Mr. Tate's essays on the literary imagination written over a period of six years. As in his earlier critical writings, he examines the relationship of ideas to experience. His test of a literary work would be the question : To what extent has the idea been visibly embodied in action possible to man? This leads him to an analysis of two extremes of idolatry in the modern mind - the idolatry of the intellect, and the idolatry of 'pure experience'. Although Mr. Tate ranges over the literature of the past, he is concerned, even in his remarkable essay on Dante, with the present. For criticism he would hold, has a present function, or none at all." ************************************************* In this book , aside from Dante, Tate tackles Edgar Allan Poe in two essays : ""The Angelic Imagination : Poe as God"; and "Our Cousin, Mr. Poe" (delivered before the Poe Society. Elsewhere he discusses Doctor Johnson's views on the Metaphysical poets. For modern poets there is Hart Crane ("Crane : the Poet as Hero") and Ezra Pound ("Ezra Pound and the Bollingen Prize"). Mr. Tate discusses Pound's unfortunate and rather gross political alliance. It is in the essay on Pound that there is a marginal bracket. Allen Tate received the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, and was the nation's Poet Laureate (1943 - 1944) . All things considered, he was a man of his time and region - a brilliant critic and poet; he was invited to the Kennedy White House, and the recipient of many awards, and he wrote numerous books. *************************************** CONTENTS :: The Man of Letters in the Modern World / To Whom Is the Poet Responsible? / The Symbolic Imagination : The Mirrors of Dante / The Angelic Imagination : Poe as God / Our Cousin, Mr. Poe / Is Literary Criticism Possible? / Johnson on the Metaphysical Poets / Longinus and the "New Criticism" / A Miscellany ::: Crane : The Poet as Hero / Ezra Pound and the Bollingen Prize / A Note on Critical "Autotelism" / Modern Poets and Conventions / The Point of Dying : Donne's "Virtuous Men" **************************************** TITLE : The Forlorn Demon : Dialectic and Critical Essays / AUTHOR : Allen Tate (John Orley Allen Tate, 1899 - 1979) [poet, essayist, teacher and social commentator] / IMPRINT : Regnery / PLACE : Chicago / DATE ; 1953 / EDITION : 2nd Printing of the First Edition (Letter line to that effect, starting with B) / STATUS : OP / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; contains the author's Preface; has footnotes and an Index; [x] + 180 pages; approximately 5 1/2" x 8 1/4"; maroon, cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine; dust-jacket printed in red and black against white (photo of author on rear flap) ********************************* CONDITION .
