Paperback. "In the Footsteps of Livingstone" presents the compelling personal diaries and detailed travel notes of Alfred Dolman, an intrepid explorer and artist who traversed the African continent during the mid-19th century. A contemporary of the legendary David Livingstone, Dolman provides a vivid and firsthand perspective on the landscapes, cultures, and challenges of Southern and Central Africa during a pivotal era of geographical discovery. The work chronicles Dolman's multiple expeditions through rugged terrains, documenting his encounters with indigenous peoples, local wildlife, and the harsh realities of colonial-era travel. His writings capture the meticulous observations of a man deeply engaged with the natural world and the complexities of the regions he explored. From the logistical struggles of ox-wagon journeys to the awe-inspiring beauty of the African interior, these journals offer a raw and unvarnished look at the life of a Victorian adventurer. For historians, scholars of African studies, and enthusiasts of classic travel literature, this collection serves as an essential primary source that illuminates the legacy of exploration and the enduring spirit of discovery that defined the period. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
