Paperback. How can an all-good and all-powerful God not only allow suffering, but create beings so vulnerable that they cannot even contend with the basic demands of life? For Mark Wallace Maguire, this was not an abstract theological question. It became painfully personal. As the father of a son with profound special needs, Maguire found himself confronting questions that no Sunday school answer could settle. What does suffering mean when it becomes part of your everyday life? Where is God when the people you love most are struggling simply to get through the day? And what does faith look like when certainty begins to disappear? Then he began to search.Over the course of six months, Maguire wrestled with the writings of C.S. Lewis, Henri Nouwen, and other thinkers while seeking out the stories and wisdom of five fathers who had each encountered suffering in deeply personal ways. Their experiences challenged his assumptions, exposed the limitations of easy answers, and forced him to reconsider what he believed about God, suffering, fatherhood, and faith. But First, We Must Begin in the Dark is not an attempt to solve the problem of suffering. It is an honest journey into its heart. There are no simple answers here. There is no tidy theological formula that makes suffering disappear.Instead, there is a father willing to ask difficult questionsnd to follow those questions wherever they lead. For anyone who has ever wondered where God is in the midst of suffering, doubted what they once believed, or struggled to reconcile faith with a broken world, this is an invitation to begin again.Sometimes, before we can find our way toward the light, we must first be willing to begin in the dark. A deliberate and intense look into the world of Special Needs & Faith by a father searching for truth on the journey. This item is printed on demand. What happens to faith when the answers stop making sense?
When Mark Wallace Maguire’s son was born with a chromosome deletion, the life he had imagined for his family changed forever. As a father, he found himself confronting questions he never expected to ask: Why would God allow this? Where is God in suffering? What does faith look like when prayers don’t produce the answers we want?
But First, We Must Begin in the Dark: A Father’s Journey into Special Needs & Faith is an honest and deeply personal exploration of those questions.
Drawing from his own experience as a special needs father, conversations with other fathers, and the wisdom of writers and theologians including C.S. Lewis, Henri Nouwen, and Frederick Buechner, Maguire explores the complicated intersection of faith, disability, fatherhood, suffering, and hope.
This is not a book offering easy answers or tidy explanations. Instead, it is an invitation to enter the darkness honestly and to discover that sometimes faith begins not when we find the answers, but when we learn to remain present in the questions.
For parents raising children with special needs, fathers struggling with faith, caregivers navigating uncertainty, and anyone who has ever wondered where God is in the midst of suffering, this book offers companionship rather than clichés.
Because sometimes, before we can find our way toward the light, we must first be willing to begin in the dark.
