The Film Show Annual (c.1950) By? Film Show Annual (the Ronseal of author names) Publisher: Film Show Annual | ISBN: none (pure, pre-barcode cinema) Condition: Good (manky but game) Offered by: Crappy Old Books Step right up for The Film Show Annual , a gloriously dog-eared love letter to mid-20th century cinema, from approximately 1950 ? the year is an educated guess based on the films inside: Quo Vadis , Annie Get Your Gun , and The Way to the Stars all strut their stuff across its pages like they own the place. This is not a cool, minimalist coffee-table book. This is a proper old annual , the sort that once lived in real houses with real ashtrays and people who said ?Shall we go to the pictures?? like it was an event. Dating the star The year isn?t printed anywhere helpful because: The first inner page is missing ? presumably the one that said ?1950? (or thereabouts) in a big optimistic font. So we?re going by internal evidence : the featured films. Think of it as cinephile carbon dating . You don?t get the comfort of an exact year, you get the fun of deduction . Very on-brand for old film fans. Condition: Good (for a book that?s lived a life) Let?s not pretend this is pristine: It?s quite manky ? the sort of lived-in condition that suggests it?s passed through multiple hands, bedrooms, and possibly attics. There?s a touch of damp to the top of the spine ? not ?swamp relic?, just that faint staining and warping that says ?I may have been stored near a window or in an overly optimistic shed.? The first inner page is missing , but: All actual reading pages are intact . The content: still there. The glamour: slightly foxed, but present. Structurally, it?s sound . Nothing is threatening to fall out. The binding has decided to soldier on. If you?re expecting museum-grade condition, you?ve wandered into the wrong shop. If you want something solid but shabby , you?re right at home. What?s inside (besides nostalgia and paper fibres) You can reasonably expect: Stills, write-ups and breathless copy about films like Quo Vadis , Annie Get Your Gun , and The Way to the Stars . Publicity photos of stars staring meaningfully into the middle distance. Confident declarations about the glory of cinema delivered in that upright, slightly earnest tone of post-war optimism. The wonderful sense that everything in film is huge, new, and terribly important , even if you?ve now seen all of it on a streaming service while half-distracted by your phone. This is cinema from a time when colour was still a treat, soundtracks were grand, and nobody had invented the phrase ?multiverse? How to use this book (realistically) This is not : A candidate for encapsulation in plastic. A fragile relic to be flipped through with white gloves in a climate-controlled vault. Something you need to apologise to if you read it outdoors. This is : A perfect book to read in the garden , on a park bench, in a deckchair, or on a scruffy sofa. Something you can leave open while you drink tea, without having a panic attack about condition reports. Ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy old cinema ephemera rather than worship it from afar. It?s built for real-world use , not curatorial anxiety. Ideal for: People who like old films and don?t mind their books a bit tatty and honest . Anyone who enjoys the phrase ?Film Annual? and remembers when stars were ?screen idols? rather than ?content creators? Readers who prefer that their movie nostalgia be slightly damp and missing a page , because frankly, that?s how real life works. Those who want to flip through pictures of old stars and think ?Good grief, look at those costumes? while their tea goes cold. Offered by Crappy Old Books , where the volumes are manky, the dates are sometimes approximate, the spines occasionally a bit damp, but the movie magic is still very much in focus . THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PA.…
