Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - leicht berieben und bestoßen, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / slightly rubbed and scuffed, otherwise perfect condition - PREFACE -- Athens is the succinct but eloquent title of the Cambridge Ancient History s fifth volume, which covers the fifth century B.C. The same emphasis will be apparent in the present collection of documents. The extant fifth-century documents, like the extant fifth-century literature, relate preponderantly to Athens. -- Whether preserved as inscriptions on stone (occasionally bronze) or as quotations in contemporary or later writers, ancient documents, like ancient literature, are subject to the hazards of survival. Our knowledge of antiquity is correspondingly fragmentary and lacunose. Since stone was used for permanent records (other materials, such as papyrus and wooden tablets, served more temporary purposes), the inscribed documents are aside from funerary monuments mostly of an official or public nature. Consequently, the inscriptions of fifth-century date are a unique source of information on such subjects as foreign relations and domestic policies, the technical details and procedures of government, treaty-making and legislation, the tribute of the Delian Confederacy and Athens treatment of the member states, the building of the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, the financing of the Peloponnesian War. The present volume includes examples of inscriptions which contribute significantly to our knowledge of these subjects. -- As for literary sources, the authors and works that constitute our prime sources of fifth-century history Herodotos, Thucydides, Plato, Aristophanes, Plutarch s Lives are readily available in libraries and in paperback reprints.
