Fibre-Fixed. Composites in Design is a book about what can be achieved when tried and tested fibres are combined with other materials - often (bio) plastics - to create fibre reinforced composite materials. These fibres can be manifold: carbon, glass, a synthetic fibre or natural fibres such as flax, hemp, jute, ramie, silk... The strength and stiffness of these fibres, combined with the lightness of plastics, inspires designers to create lightweight, energy-efficient products. At the same time, the composite materials allow a great freedom of shape and design. Designing and using composite materials can be an answer to the social and ecological challenges today's society is facing. This book, edited by Lut Pil and Ignaas Verpoest, focuses on the results achieved in the past five years and looks ahead to some of the breakthroughs that are expected in the years to come. The projects presented in the book are diverse and come from different sectors such as mobility, sports, medical applications, energy supply, infrastructure, architecture and products for daily use. Fibre-Fixed. Composites in Design gaat over wat men kan bereiken wanneer vezels worden gecombineerd met ander materiaal, veelal een (bio)kunststof, en vezelversterkte composietmaterialen vormen. De vezels kunnen koolstof-, glas- of andere synthetische vezels zijn, of natuurlijke vezels zoals vlas, hennep, jute, ramie, zijde… De sterkte en stijfheid van de vezels, gecombineerd met de lichtheid van kunststoffen, inspireert designers tot het creëren van lichte, energie-efficiënte producten. Tegelijkertijd laten de composietmaterialen een grote vormvrijheid toe. Ook met minder voor de hand liggende vezels wordt geëxperimenteerd, zoals met dennennaalden, bananen- en rijstschilvezels, of zelfs mycelium waarbij het composietmateriaal al groeiend ontstaat. Ontwerpen met composietmaterialen situeert zich in een context van maatschappelijke uitdagingen: klimaatopwarming, ecologische impact, duurzaamheid, mobiliteitsproblematiek, veroudering van de bevolking, digitalisering. Even belangrijk is hoe de eigenschappen van composietmaterialen het uitgangspunt vormen voor gebruiksobjecten waarin hightech zich verbindt met artistieke verbeelding, poëzie, tegendraadse schoonheid, ambacht, oude en nieuwe culturele gebruiken.

Het boek, onder de redactie van Lut Pil (LUCA School of Arts) en Ignaas Verpoest (KU Leuven), focust op de voorbije vijf jaar en presenteert de te verwachten doorbraken voor de komende jaren. De projecten zijn geselecteerd uit uiteenlopende sectoren als mobiliteit, sport, medische toepassingen, energievoorziening, infrastructuur, architectuur, gebruiksproducten. Het boek is een vervolg op de publicatie From bakelite to composite. Design in new materials (Stichting Kunstboek, 2002).
Deze publicatie verschijnt naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling 'Fibre-Fixed. Composites in Design' in Design Museum Gent (26.10.2018 - 21.04.2019).
