Essential concepts are presented in an accessible manner and examples are well illustrated with case histories. Identifiable heart rate patterns are described and the pathophysiological explanations emphasise the significance of the different fetal heart rate patterns. Midwives are at the 'front line' as they deliver most of the bedside care in the labour ward, and particularly when caring for women at home. However, they are part of a wider team. This book will help ensure that both midwives and doctors share a consistent and informed approach to fetal monitoring.

"Since continuous electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) was introduced in the 1970s and caesarean section rates skyrocketed without any improvement in perinatal mortality or morbidity, the search has been on to improve cardiotocography (CTG) interpretation. This quest rests on the premise that improving interpretation will lower the false positive rate of EFM. Gibb and Arulkumaran have been at the forefront of the challenge with this, the second edition of their book... Importantly, it bases CTG interpretation in real clinical scenarios that highlight the importance of judging each case on the full clinical picture. It covers normal and abnormal traces comprehensively with additional chapters on fetal blood sampling and alternative methods of fetal surveillance. "MIDIRS Midwifery Digest, Vol 9 No 2, June 1999
