Its primary significance lies in its editor's choice of text and his influence in reviving public interest in Alexander Hamilton's contributions. The 1888 edition is notable for being based on the original McLean Edition of 1788 and the newspaper texts in which the essays first appeared. This was a deliberate choice to discard changes and edits subsequently introduced by the authors (Hamilton and Madison) in later editions, aiming to present the text in its initial form as read by the public during the ratification debates. While later scholarly editions have since been produced, Lodge's edition was important for its time in attempting to get back to the original source material.
