A Canyon Song Novella
by Scott Simpson
When a former church elder asks Aubrey to write a song for his daughter, he doesn’t expect the request to reopen a wound that never fully healed.
Aubrey once stood in the pulpit of their small-town church. Now he lives alone at the edge of a canyon, making a quiet living writing commissioned songs that tell other people’s stories — memorials, reconciliations, moments too fragile for ordinary conversation. He has learned that music can sometimes hold what theology cannot.
Daniel has always been certain — certain of Scripture, certain of doctrine, certain of where the lines are drawn. But when his daughter comes out and steps beyond those lines, certainty fractures. He wants to remain close to her. He wants to remain faithful to God. He no longer knows how to do both.
Together, Aubrey and Daniel begin shaping a song — not a hymn of resolution, but a fragile offering of presence. As father and daughter prepare to meet at the canyon, long-held beliefs tremble, marriages strain, and the cost of staying in relationship becomes painfully real.
Set in a rural community where faith runs deep and fractures run deeper, Fault Line explores:
-
the aftershocks of religious disillusionment
-
the tension between conviction and compassion
-
the quiet courage of fathers and daughters
-
and the healing power of art when arguments fail
Tender, honest, and unafraid of uncertainty, Fault Line is a story about standing in the doorway when walking away would be easier.
Fault Line is the second novella in the Canyon Song Novella Series, beginning with Canyon Song, with more stories to come.
