Descripción del artículo del vendedor

Medical Press and Circular, June 15, 1894. - London : Danks & Son, Sterm Printers, 1894, 8°, 25 pp., 4 Figs., half cloth binding with bound-in front wrapper. Rare Offprint! "'The Factors of Insanities' (FI) was first published in 1894, the year that John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) retired from the London Hospital. Little is known about the history of the composition of FI? The paper is important, for it includes the last summary of Jackson's views on the nature and formation of mental symptoms. During this period of his life, Jackson seems to have been more interested in matters psychiatric. In 1888 he had commented favourably on a piece on 'Inhibition' by Charles Mercier, and in 1895 debated with D. H. Tuke on the meaning of 'Imperative Ideas'? A fair amount has been written on Jackson's ideology and views on the CNS in health and disease? Less exists on the impact (or lack) of his ideas on psychiatry? Jackson's definitive intellectual biography remains to be written. When compared with the depth of analysis reached by contemporary continental alienists, it is tempting to consider FI as naive? This would be a mistake. FI is a good instance of how English physicians thought at a time when neurology had not yet been constructed and when 'mental disorders' and 'neurological diseases' were still in the same nosological box; indeed, FI makes a case for keeping them together. FI also poses the question of why Jackson's ideas on insanity have had no impact on Anglo-Saxon psychiatry. FI is not about the cerebral basis of insanity, its classification or anything related to clinical practice: 'It would be as absurd to attempt to arrange patients in an Asylum on the principle of Dissolution as it would be to arrange plants in a kitchen garden on the "natural system" of botanists.' (Jackson 1894: 615)." Classic Text No. 47: The Factors of Insanities J. HUGHLINGS JACKSON. Introduction by G. E. BERRIOS. History of Psychiatry, xii (2001) 353-373. John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a British neurologist whose studies of epilepsy, speech defects, and nervous-system disorders arising from injury to the brain and spinal cord helped to define modern neurology. "He created the conceptual framework for clinical neurophysiology, the discipline that underlies diagnostic neurology. He began by establishing a consistent scientific method based on the systematic analysis of anatomy, pathology and physiology. This method revolved around his concept of the focal lesion, a concept that he refined and which became a cornerstone of bedside neurology. He recognized that focal epilepsy and focal necrosis can be viewed as reciprocal physiological processes, and concluded that somatotopic representation is found in the entire nervous system including the cortex."
