Presents a touch of edgewear, all else fine. Terry Landau was an American writer and researcher who brought to her work an interest in the intersection of science, perception, and human experience, approaching her subjects with the accessibility and narrative clarity of a writer committed to making complex material engaging and comprehensible to a broad general readership. Her background and interests positioned her well to tackle a subject that sits at the confluence of biology, psychology, neuroscience, cultural history, and everyday human experience. About Faces is a wide ranging exploration of the human face, examining it from multiple perspectives including the biological and evolutionary foundations of facial structure and expression, the psychology and neuroscience of how human beings perceive and recognize faces, and the cultural and social dimensions of how faces are read, judged, and responded to across different human contexts and traditions. The face as a subject offers extraordinary richness for a writer willing to pursue it across disciplinary boundaries, as it touches on some of the most fundamental aspects of human experience including identity, communication, social belonging, and the recognition of emotion. The book examines the remarkable human capacity for face recognition, which neuroscience has revealed to be a highly specialized cognitive function supported by dedicated neural architecture, and explores what happens when this capacity is disrupted or absent as in the condition of prosopagnosia or face blindness. This scientific content is balanced with broader cultural and historical material examining how faces have been represented, interpreted, and invested with meaning across different societies and historical periods. Landau also addresses the social dimensions of facial appearance, including the ways in which physical attractiveness and facial characteristics influence human judgment and social interaction in ways that are often unconscious and automatic, drawing on psychological research to illuminate the extent to which faces shape our responses to one another in ways we rarely examine critically. The writing is accessible and engaging throughout, reflecting the author's awareness that her subject matter, while grounded in serious scientific and scholarly research, has an immediate and universal human appeal that makes it well suited to presentation for a general audience curious about the science and culture of one of the most fundamentally human of all subjects.…
