"FOCUS in Practice: Standardized Cloud Cost Data for FinOps Automation"

Cloud cost management fails at scale for the same reason distributed systems fail without contracts: inconsistent interfaces and ambiguous semantics. This book is written for experienced FinOps practitioners, data engineers, and finance-minded platform leaders who need repeatable, automation-ready cost data across multiple cloud providers. If you’re tired of bespoke billing pipelines, brittle dashboards, and “why did yesterday change?” conversations, it shows how to build trustable cost intelligence that survives real-world billing behavior.

You’ll learn how FOCUS (the FinOps Foundation–supported specification) standardizes cost and usage data, how to adopt it version-aware, and how to implement the core data model with correct grain, measures, identifiers, and lineage. The book walks through building a canonical FOCUS Cost & Usage dataset—ingestion, normalization, enrichment, and serving—then hardens it with completeness/recency gating, revision handling, and audit trails. Finally, it applies the resulting data product to finance-grade workflows: allocation and shared-cost splitting, invoice reconciliation, multi-currency and token economics, commitment governance, and forecast-ready budgeting inputs—plus a reusable query library and CI-style conformance validation.

Readers should be comfortable with warehouses/lakehouses, SQL, and production ETL/ELT operations. The focus is on operational patterns, decision criteria, and failure modes—so your FinOps automation produces actions and accountability, n
