First published in 1953, this book is the fourth printing from 1963, 416 pages, illustrated, and with a Foreword by The Right Hon. The Earl of Halsbury. ."Some four years ago, finding a certain limited knowledge of how Electrical Digital Computers function, I turned to the patent literature as the only comprehensive digest on information on the subject, one moreover written by draughtsmen whose special skill it is to effect an extreme clarity and precision of description. Notwithstanding the lucky circumstance of having this literature readily available, I found the mental struggle a severe one. Subsequent requests by colleagues to write a "child's guide to computers" left me acutely aware of how difficult the task was, and preusal of various popular expositions written since leave me equally unsatisfied. I was therefore much interested when Dr. Bowden told me that he was producing a book on the subject himself. It is undoubtedly the best general account yet written." In grading the book itself as Near Fine I'm taking into consideration the previous owner who has signed his name twice on ffep as Stan Foote. This seems to be the H. (Horace) Stanwood Foote who is mentioned in David Boslaugh's book When Computers Went to Sea: The Digitization of the U.S. Navy. It's probably Foote's small notation "Page 30" in red pencil on the rfep, and with then a single line underlined in red pencil on p.30, a brief 1842 Lady Lovelace quote about the Analytical Engine, and to note, this book's frontis is a portrait of Lady Lovelace as "Ada Augusta, The Countess of Lovelace". Otherwise, the book itself is about flawless w/ only a normal shallow bump at each spine end. The book's dj is quite nice with price corner intact, no tears & only a very few minor imperfections incl only a very light amount of tanning.
