Octavos. 4 volumes. Matched set. Brown cloth hardcovers with blind stamped covers. Gilt stamped titles on the spines Part I and II. Both map volumes present and bound in brown cloth with blind stamped covers and gilt titles on the front boards. Collation as follows: Part I: [1], iv, (iv), 417 pages, [2]. Part II: [1], xii, 339 pages, [1]. Part I illustrated with 16 engraved plates. Part II illustrated with 36 engraved plates and 38 illustrated figures. Three folding maps in Part I of Herndon's Maps: approximately 72" x 28" "plan of the Rivers of the Amazon"; approximately 11" x 17" "plan de curso de Los Rios Huallaga Y Ucayali Pampa del Sacramento"; and approximately 19" x 20" colored map "Valley of the Amazon." Two folding maps in Part II Gibbon's Report: 24" x 19" and 30" x 20". Text for both volumes have light to moderate foxing and toning. Three small pin holes on the large folding map Part I at the intersection of the folds. The second map in Part I has an approx. 3" closed split on the right side fold (no loss of content). Part II large folding map has some light edge wear and tear, toning, and light creases underneath the title in bottom left corner. Maps and covers are in good condition. Illustrated cut out on the front paste down part II. Illustration has the printed name R. W. Williams Planter with Vista, La written in old ink on the illustration.
