Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of sign painting, a craft that has evolved dramatically over time. The author guides readers through a rich historical journey, exploring the origins of signs in ancient Greece and Rome, tracing the craft's development through medieval Europe, and spotlighting the contributions of notable sign painters, including Benedict Arnold. The book then dives into the technical aspects of sign painting, from the artistry of lettering and shading to the practicalities of choosing brushes, colors, and materials. It reveals a wealth of trade secrets, including the art of gilding on glass, the invention of the wire sign, and the nuances of crafting signs on various surfaces such as wood, tin, and glass. Throughout, the author emphasizes the importance of both artistry and craftsmanship, arguing that a successful sign painter must master both the technical skills of lettering and the aesthetic sensibilities of design. The book serves as a comprehensive guide for aspiring and established sign painters, offering insights that transcend mere technical instruction and delve into the heart of the craft's historical significance and enduring artistic value. This in-depth exploration illuminates the enduring power of signs as both functional and artistic expressions of commerce and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Reseña del editor
Uring the past few years quite a number Of works for sign painters have appeared from the press, but these have mainly been devoted to illustrations, or lay-outs and alphabets Of various kinds, the text part being almost nil. TO supply the need for a practical text book, a need that I have clearly recognized during my several years' experience as an editor Of a paint er's periodical, and also While instructing in the sign painting art at the Indianapolis Technical Institute, some five years ago, the present work is here Offered. ~in making this book I have been under Obliga tions to many Of the leading sign painters Of the country, and also to various trade publications, and to these I wish to extend, as far as I can, due credit. My work has indeed been that Of the. Editor, not Of the. Author. I am able in only a few cases to render credit by name, but all Whose writings have contrib uted toward this work, whether small or large it may have been, have the assurance that goes with all good and worthy deeds, that they carry their own reward In satisfaction felt from the consciousness Of so doing.
In the forty-eight chapters Of this work will be found the most that can be given regarding the art and practise Of sign painting in this country. Many minds are. Represented therein. Various methods for doing various things are given, all equally good, though. Differing in. Minor points. The book is in tended for the expert workman, not the learner or amateur. It is a book Of ready reference.
I have consulted all the books there are, of domes tic and foreign origin, relating to the subject of sign painting, and have also carefully gleaned the pages Of the various trade publications for, the past several years for matter relating to the subject, and what I have gathered in this way has been carefully edited or revised as the case required, and thus I have sought to give the book a permanent and practical value that could not be secured by hasty or less care ful work. I have spent the greater part Of the pres ent year in the preparation Of the work. And now I Offer it to the trade, with the hope and expectation that it will meet a real need and adequately supply that need. There is no other book at least that comes as near to this mark.
