Police and security professionals already carry the conventional tools of the job. This book is about the things you may not have considered.

Everyday Carry explores unconventional, compact, and practical items that can add useful capabilities to a police or security loadout without turning it into a mountain of equipment. The focus is not on collecting more gear. It is on thinking differently about what you carry, identifying gaps in your capabilities, and finding efficient ways to solve problems before they happen.

Drawing on experience, Danny Cassidy examines equipment and ideas borrowed from emergency services, outdoor recreation, industry, survival, medicine, and everyday life. Some items solve one very specific problem. Others provide several completely different capabilities from something small enough to disappear into a pocket or pouch.

The book explores observation, navigation and signalling; human performance and emergency sustainment; environmental, access and mobility problems; repair and general utility; cordage and emergency movement; load management; improvisation; emergency communications; and alternative ways to carry additional equipment.

But this is not a checklist of things every officer or security professional should buy.

Every item has a cost in weight, bulk, complexity, money, and mobility. The real question is not simply, “Could this be useful?” Almost anything could be useful. The better question is whether the capability it provides justifies the burden of carrying it.

Sometimes the ideal equipment is in the vehicle. Sometimes it belongs to another profession that has not arrived yet. Sometimes the thing you need is simply too large, specialized, or unlikely to justify carrying every day.

That leaves an important middle ground.

Carry what makes sense. Understand its limitations. Learn from other professions. Test your equipment. Identify weaknesses. And above all, think in terms of capabilities rather than gadgets.

Because when something unexpected happens, having one more option can make all the difference.
