Oishi Matora of Nagoya was a student of Hokusai. Hyakunin Isshu Hitoyogatari is a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka by one hundred poets. The most famous and standard version was compiled by Fujiwara no Teika. Waka poetry from the Heian period which became very popular in Japan from the 16th century with this work becoming one of the most important literary works on poetry from the Edo period. The work contains calligraphy, notes and anecdotes on waka poetry by zaki, Masayoshi. This rare 1833 woodblock print is written in a column handwritten format with furigana for easier reading and includes illustrations of samurai battles, scenery, ships, lords and ladies, castles, temples, demons, and more!
