Descripción del artículo del vendedor

The second edition of this essay on linguistics regarding English, Latin and Greek. An uncommon work, written by John Foster. The second edition of this work is an expansion on the first edition of the previous year. This work is an analysis on varying accents when speaking Greek. Foster uses examples of Aeolic, Greek, Latin and English syntax and metre to support his thesis. To this work Foster defends the accentuation of Greek against the theories of the Dutch classical scholar Vossius and English scholar Henry Gally. More specifically, Foster is responding to Gally's work 'A Dissertation against pronouncing the Greek Language according to accents'. Gally later issued a response to Foster's rebuttal titled 'A Second Dissertation against pronouncing the Greek Language according to accents, in answer to Mr [John] Foster's Essay'. This second edition of Foster's work issued the same year as Gally's response, includes a further response to Gally's 'Second Dissertation'. ESTC N9384 Foster also analyses the Greek Elegiac poem of M Musurus with a Latin version and notes. Prior owner''s inscription to the endpapers from the Quarterly Review no.53. John Foster was an esteemed figure in society, being the Canon of Windsor from 1772 to 1773 and Headmaster of Eton College from 1765 to his death in 1773. A fascinating etymological work from the eighteenth century that looks at the development of language using archaic examples. In a full calf binding. Rebacked with the original boards preserved. Externally, smart with patches of rubbing to the boards. Prior owner's inscription to the endpapers and front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Small, light tidemark to the outer edge of the first few pages to the preface at the top. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd light spots. Very Good Indeed.…
