Print on Demand. This book delves into the early history of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers, and its profound impact on the settlement and development of Pennsylvania. The author traces the origins of the Quaker movement to George Fox, Robert Barclay, and William Penn, exploring their influential teachings on the indwelling presence of Christ and the equality of all people. The book sheds light on the persecution and challenges faced by early Friends, including their unwavering commitment to non-violence, and their advocacy for religious toleration, peace, and social justice. The author places the Quakers' beliefs and practices within the broader context of 17th-century religious and intellectual ferment, highlighting their distinctive contributions to Christian thought and the shaping of American values. Ultimately, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the Quaker movement's enduring legacy, emphasizing its relevance to contemporary seekers of spiritual truth and social harmony. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Biography and Autobiography
Two hundred and thirty-five years ago the Religious Society of Friends began to be known in England. Two hundred years ago this Province was first settled by William Penn. Of the latter event we have lately heard much, of the former but little 5 and yet the latter was so much the natural sequence of the former, that the history of the one is incomplete with out the history of the other.
I propose, therefore, this evening to speak of three men, each of whom was prominent in the early history of the Society of Friends, and each of whom had somewhat to do with the settlement of Pennsylvania and its vicinity. I allude to George Fox, Robert Barclay and William Penn.
I am well aware that to some who are present this account will have for them all the familiarity of a thrice-told tale. I cannot but believe that to others, and especially to the younger members of this Institute, there will be some facts mentioned which are new to them, and I am strong in the conviction that it will do no harm to any of us often to be reminded what manner of men they were to whom as Friends, and as Pennsylvanians, we owe so much.
