Descripción del artículo del vendedor

210 S. / p., Abb. Altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand - The Hellenistic Background -- Since the content of this book is mainly concerned with style, we may well begin with Buffon's definition embodied in the famous Discours which he delivered to the French Academy on the occasion of his entrance into that august body in 1753. The date has something to do with the definition, if we remember that it was only seven years later that Soufflot commenced the Pantheon, and with it the Neo-Classic movement in French architecture, which was to be followed by a similar reversion to classic principles in sculpture and painting as well. French literature also forsook, so soon after Buffon's Discours as to seem to be influenced thereby, the artificial coquetry of the rococo manner of the earlier century and responded to the ideals of serious approach and a priori order that the Discours demands. - Contents -- Preface -- The Hellenistic Background -- Neo-Attic Style -- Alexandrian Style -- The Beginning of Christian Art -- Christian Art in Egypt and North Africa -- Christian Art in the Asiatic East -- The Orientalizing of Latin Style -- The Art of Ravenna -- The End of Early Christian Art -- Notes -- Index -- The Illustrations.
