26 pp. 8 maps, of which 5 are double page (one in colour). // A superb collection of maps and one coloured plate detailing the progress and excursions of the Anglo-French expedition up the coast of China in 1860, its naval engagement with the Chinese at the Taku forts and Peh-Tang in the Tianjin area and the route marched by the Anglo-French army from Tianjin to Peking which led to the burning and destruction of the Yuanmingyuan.Prepared from official documents under the direction of Lieutenant de Vaisseau Pallu and published by the French Dépot de la Marine in 1863. Printed by Auguste Bry in Paris. The maps and coloured plate, all in excellent condition, depict the following:1. CARTE POUR SERVIR A L?INTELLIGENCE DES OPERATIONS SUR LES COTES DE CHINEMap depicting the Chinese coast, Korea and Japan with the main Chinese coastal cities and points of relevance to the Anglo-French campaign.2. PLAN DE LA VILLE DE SHANG-HAI.This map was compiled to show the preparations for the defence of Shanghai in June and July 1860 during the Taiping Rebellion, interesting in itself but, in our view, much more important and fascinating as one of the earliest western maps showing details of Shanghai from the old walled city with its canals and pagodas through to the recently-established French and English concessions with Park Lane (now Nanjing Street), Rope Walk Road, the racecourse, various consulates etc. 3. PLAN DE LA RADE DE TCHE-FOU ET DE L?ETABLISSEMENT DE YAN-TAIDouble-page map showing the natural harbour of Tche-fou and the town of Yantai with the English and French positions on the offshore islands. 4. PLAN POUR SERVIR A L?INTELLIGENCE DES OPERATIONS EXECUTEES PAR LES FORCES ALLIEES.DU PEH-TANG-HO ET DU PEI-HO.Impressive double-page map showing the coastal area of allied operations and Chinese resistance around the Taku forts and Peh-Tang. Shows local geographical detail, forts and towns, anchorages and fleet dispositions, sites of various attacks and routes taken by army forays. 5. PLAN DE L?OCCUPATION DE TIEN-TSIN PAR LA FLOTILLE ANGLO-FRANCAISE LE 24 AOUT 1860.Map showing the occupation of Tianjin by the Anglo-French Fleet in August 1860 with various named ships strung out along the river. As with the Shanghai map, the chief importance of this plate is the early depiction and detail of the city of Tianjin showing the layout of the now-vanished walled city and the more recent development outside its ramparts.6. CARTE DU PEI-HO.Double-page map showing the route of the river Bei from the Peking area down to Tianjin and thence to the sea. The route of the river was closely followed by the Allied Army in 1860 on its march from the Taku forts through Tianjin and onto Peking. The map shows the route the army took with details of Chinese villages and towns en-route including a map of Peking showing some detail and the disposition of the Expedition forces. A central inset shows an additional outline map of the city of Peking. 7. PLAN DE L?EMBOUCHERE DU PEI-HO ET DE SES DEFENSES EN 1860. ITINERAIRE SUIVI DE TA-KOU A TCHE-FOU PAR MR. DESVARANNES, LIEUTENTANT DE VAISSEAU.Double-page plate with 2 main maps, one showing details of the blockade of the Bei river and its defences - the Chinese forts with their lines of cannon fire. The second main map on the plate shows the land route followed by Lieutenant Desvarannes from Yantai to the Taku forts. A smaller inset map shows the entry from the sea into the river Ta-Tsin-Ho.8. VUES, COUPES ET CROQUIS DES DEFENSES DU PEH-TANG-HO ET DU PEI-HO.A double-page coloured plate showing 3 perspectives of the town and fortifications at Peh-Tang, Pei-Ho and Taku plus 7 illustrations of various types of device used in the naval blockade, including iron spikes anchored in the riverbed, chained beams traversing the river and barriers of interwoven wood. All text in French. A good clean copy. The plates in fine condition. Rebound. Extremely rare.
