Paperback. When a young dragon's fire answers faster than his choices, strength can look a lot like danger. Calder is not the biggest dragon in the keep, or the fiercest-but his fire is quick. It flares when he's startled, when things feel unfair, when careless humans push too hard. After a near-disaster in the training yard, Calder is given a rule that feels impossible: make space, take time, choose. and when you must speak, speak last. Under the steady eye of Sir Edrin, Calder begins a different kind of training. Instead of learning new ways to fight, he practices stopping. Holding a pebble instead of a grudge. Choosing rope instead of flame. Facing a frightened stablehand, a reckless boy, and a whole keep that would rather fear him than understand him. Each small choice asks the same question: Will you let your fire rule you, or will you learn to rule it? Set in a stone keep full of nervous guards, stubborn mules, and quietly brave kids, this illustrated novella continues the story begun in Xander: Book 1, exploring emotional regulation, impulse control, and courage in a way that resonates with both children and adults. Thoughtful black-and-white dragon illustrations capture Calder's most important moments-when he almost loses control, and when he doesn't. Perfect for: - Parents and caregivers looking for a powerful, non-preachy story about big feelings and self-control - Kids who love dragons, training yards, and character-driven fantasy - Classrooms, counseling settings, and read-aloud time with neurodivergent or strong-willed kids If your child has a quick temper, a fast mouth, or a heart that feels "too much," Calder's story will help them see their own fire as something they can guide-not something they have to fear. Calder is not the biggest dragon in the keep, or the fiercest—but his fire is quick. It flares when he’s startled, when things feel unfair, when careless humans push too hard. After a near‑disaster in the training yard, Calder is given a rule that feels impossible: make space, take time, choose… and when you must speak, speak last.
Thoughtful black‑and‑white dragon illustrations capture Calder’s most important moments—when he almost loses control, and when he doesn’t.
Perfect for:
• Parents and caregivers looking for a powerful, non‑preachy story about big feelings and self‑control
• Kids who love dragons, training yards, and character‑driven fantasy
• Classrooms, counseling settings, and read‑aloud time with neurodivergent or strong‑willed kids
If your child has a quick temper, a fast mouth, or a heart that feels “too much,” Calder’s story will help them see their own fire as something they can guide—not something they have to fear.
