Print on Demand. This book provides an anthology of writings by Southern-born, Southern-raised, white Protestants who dissent from the dominant white supremacist views of their region in mid-20th century America. Coming together at a time of great strife, these prominent Southern writers offer their personal experiences, historical insights, and moral arguments in support of racial equality. The book offers a range of perspectives from various walks of life, revealing the complexities and challenges of living in a segregated society on the cusp of great change. Through their eloquent essays, the authors collectively present a powerful case for justice and human dignity, while acknowledging the deep-rooted racism embedded in Southern culture. The book not only captures a critical moment in American history but also provides a thoughtful exploration of race relations, the evolving social landscape, and the search for common ground amidst vast differences. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Political Theory and History
These Southerners also speak at times about the rest of the nation. To us who have moved North, it often seems that we are now surrounded by a near vacuum occupied only by talk without action. This empty talk issues from self-styled liber als willing to die vicariously for the Negro in the South but unmoved to busy themselves on behalf of the Negro in the North. It is easy, and tempting, to be virtuous if your virtue is never tested. It is a challenge of a man's fiber and guts if in being brotherly, and courageous, he risks economic, social or political disadvantage, if not destruction. I admire the writers here who still live in the South and are yet willing to voice their most personal concern over what 15 happening in and to the South. Those of us who have moved away know the dec1s1ons they have had to make, and the integrity with which they confront man as he is and as he ought to be.
