Master Your Mind, Reclaim Your Peace, and Build an Unshakeable Inner Fortress.
In a world filled with distraction, anxiety, and events beyond our control, where can we turn for strength and tranquility? The answers lie in the timeless wisdom of Stoicism, and there is no more powerful guide than Epictetus—a man who was born a slave but lived as one of the freest souls in the Roman Empire.
Epictetus’s own life was a testament to his teachings. Enslaved in the court of Emperor Nero, he endured immense hardship, including a deliberately broken leg, with perfect Stoic composure. After gaining his freedom, he established a legendary philosophical school where he taught that the key to a flourishing life is distinguishing what is within our control from what is not. He wrote nothing himself; his powerful lectures were meticulously transcribed by his devoted student, Arrian, preserving an "operating system for life" that has guided leaders, artists, and thinkers for nearly two millennia.
This definitive edition by The Lyceum Press is crafted for the modern reader, offering not just the complete surviving text of the Discourses but also a suite of essential supplementary materials to illuminate the path of the Stoic practitioner.
Inside, you will find:
-
A New, Accessible Translation: The profound wisdom of Epictetus is rendered in clear, direct prose that speaks to the challenges of the 21st century.
-
Exclusive Introductory Essays: Delve into a foundational overview of Stoicism and a unique comparison of Epictetus’s perspective from the bottom of society with Marcus Aurelius’s from the top, demonstrating that this philosophy is for everyone, from the throne room to the prison cell .
-
Historical Context: Journey back to the philosophy’s roots with biographies of the founding Greek Stoics—Zeno of Citium, Cleanthes, and the brilliant logician Chrysippus .
-
Comprehensive Glossary: Quickly reference and understand key Stoic terms like phantasia (impressions), adiaphora (indifferents), and the "Dichotomy of Control" with a detailed, organized glossary .
The Discourses is not a book of abstract theories; it is a practical guide to living. Through its pages, you will learn how to:
-
Build an "inner citadel" of peace that cannot be breached by external events.
-
Overcome destructive emotions like anger, fear, and grief.
-
Find your purpose by fulfilling your social roles with virtue and grace .
-
Transform every obstacle into an opportunity for growth, like an athlete training for the Olympics .
As Epictetus taught, "the door is open". Your journey to resilience, tranquility, and true freedom begins now.

Descripción de la tienda
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
