Thick 8vo (159 x 106 mm). [12], 739pp., [97]. Signatures: +(6); A-3F(8); 3G(2). Roman type (citations in italic), text in ruled borders, shoulder gloss in the margins citing relevant biblical passages, typographic headpieces, title and small woodcut printer’s device within border of small fleurons. Period Italian vellum over paper boards, manuscript title to spine; (title worn with some faded inscriptions and with ink stamp to verso "Ex Libris Augustini Mueller No.," somewhat dampstained but sturdy and complete). Final verso inscribed in near contemporary hand in Italian "francisco" and other addenda. Rare first edition of Ridolfi’s pocket dictionary of virtues and vices, a Franciscan lexical compilation for aspiring young clergy. Rare 1580 first edition of Ridolfi’s ethical dictionary; another edition printed in Lyon the following year by Tardif. Only a handful of books survive from this Typographic Society press, which was active in Bologna from 1574 to 1581. Pietro Ridolfi, a Franciscan brother, wrote this dictionary of virtues (covering abstinence to vita aeterna) and vices (from adultery to usury) as an aid in the composition of sermons. The Franciscans as a rule are dedicated to the virtues, especially those of humility and poverty, and take these vows when entering the order. As the new orators of the period, Franciscans and Dominicans each inserted mnemonic images into their sermons as a way to aid the recall of both preachers and listeners. The products of such prompts in medieval sermons, which included elaborate verbal images of the virtues and vices, were then allegorized in moral terms and circulated on the continent. Ridolfi’s dictionary classification proves that verbal images and complicated schema functioned as ‘ordering devices’ for those preaching and listening to sermons, whilst also provoking an affective response that enhanced listeners’ devotional and penitential experiences. The dictionary is prefaced by a 39-chapter introduction on rhetorical style, proper use of sources, and effective thematic manipulation when writing sermons. Each entry includes mass of commentary and Biblical citations. There are three indices, two of subjects and a third of pertinent biblical passages under each of the virtues or vices. Important and extremely scarce lexicon with which the Franciscans came to value imaginative meditation as part of their own spiritual lives. Their habit of meditating on mental images of the virtues and vices eventually spilled out into their sermons. This book located only in Italian institutions. STC 852545.
