Preferring to call his role scribe and not author, Rusty Stephens had, for a very long time, been searching for a new level of understanding about spirituality. He could not see how to go forward, knew he could not go back, yet was experiencing increasing discomfort with where he was. A point of dissatisfaction and bewilderment had come. He would soon learn that such times reached by all of us, often described as a "dark night of the soul" are points of spiritual tension, signaling opportunity for growth. In his frustration he became angry at God and said out loud "I am tired of trying to read signs, clouds, chicken entrails, or tea leaves. There must somewhere be a giant red phone with a giant capital letter 'G' on the dial plate and I want, by God, the 800 number" A turning of the corner had come in that moment of frustration, anger, and yet also, prayer. One night the spiritual phone rang and he was instructed to write down the dialogues that followed. He learned of the true unity of all things and that each of us, brothers and sisters, are a vital loved and loving part of that whole. A wide range of topics was covered including: the Creator, the Universe, the Holy Spirit, love, peace, joy and bliss, spiritual growth, ego, personality, right relationship, meditation, miracles, the world crisis, Masters, America, karma, the reality of brotherhood, the Christ, and humanities' critical role in the unfolding of these extraordinary times of change. Given also were specific techniques and exercises for spiritual awareness and growth. He was also to learn of the importance of actually asking for spiritual help and guidance and that this capacity to ask and also to receive is hardwired into each of us.

PART ONE

HOW TO SEE

So, I put my pen to paper and a clear voice speaking in English said:

Being a discourse upon the way of remembering who and what you are, on rejoining what you never left and reframing your view to move you away from the battleground of the present day to the playground of the Soul. Being a concrete approach to turning the battleground into the playground where joy, laughter, and peace beyond your current understanding are waiting.

I was then given the first of what would turn out to be 12 exercises.

EXERCISE 1

HOW TO SEE

The physical eyes do not see the world as it is but as the little ego has conceptualized it. The image in the eye is of a vision that exists in the lower mind before the eye is opened upon the world. Hence the eye does not actually see anything that is real.

Given then that you do not see the real world how do you reorient your looking? How do you learn to see with the eye of the Soul?

First close your physical eyes, draw a deeper than usual breath and calm your lower mind. Then ask for a new prescription to be fitted so as to correct your sight. See this actually happening. See a pair of glasses or contacts being placed into position. See them as shiny crystal and the clearest optics you have ever imagined. Know that when in place they will give you a new clarity of vision that you have never seen before with your waking sight. Know that this new capacity for sight will open unto you the view of joy and love that is a natural part of your looking to your brother as yourself.

Do this exercise every day. Do it anytime you realize that you are looking through only the physical eye. With practice you will be able to use this moment to refocus, to think again, to become centered and connected again, and to thus assert your higher-self. It can be done quickly within the time it takes to draw a deep breath.

Learn to do this when confronted with anything that empowers the little ego. Do this before you respond in thought, word or deed to your brother in any way.

After some practice, this will become easier and you will find that it is no longer a required conscious act but has become a constant and a good habit. This will be a strong start to your reorienting your entire being to the light of your Soul. It is a good first step to a new way of looking at your brother, yourself, and the essential unity of all things.

After working on this exercise there was a pause. I was given to understand that I could ask a question. The question that I formed came from my studies at the time where I had been introduced to the concept of attachment and a new concept, detachment. Thus began the dialogue reported in this journal of a student.

What do I do to be free of the attachment and fear?

Your question really is one of how can I learn and grow in my knowledge, understanding and practice of Spiritual growth. In so declaring, you are stating and showing your readiness for growth and are tapping into the law that is behind the saying "Ask and you shall receive."

The basic answer is that there are three ways to learn and grow Spiritually. They are study, meditate and serve. They go together. Service is the most fruitful of the three because it in reality embodies the other two. More on that later.

To answer your more specific question though and for you personally at this time—write.

Write and leave it to Me. Let go and let your faith take you higher. Do the work as you have seen. Ask for help. It will not be withheld. Do not worry so. Do not sweat.

Much of my motive here is what has been referred to as the dark night of the Soul. I think I have been there much of late and relate it in particular to a brother with whom I am having conflict after a period of being, I thought, on our way to a real and deep friendship. This brother has become increasingly attacking. This relationship has become a very real source of pain for me. What do I do? There has to be a better way.

You are overreacting. All will be well. You are to learn to handle this kind of energy. I will be with you. I am showing you energy that you must release. Not just for you but for all. It is the energy of fear. Learn to let it go.

Call down the light and have it cleanse you and all others. You know how to do this. Now learn to remember, recall and use it at will.

Stay connected always, not just at high moments.

Take care of your physical needs as well.

Stay on the diet. Get more help. You are feeling better.

Your brother, too, after a period of turmoil, is better. You are My gift to him and him to you.

Okay, I have been trying to call down the light and to remember to use it to cleanse my brother and me. However, I am still very susceptible to the difficulty of the interactions in the relationship. You say to "Learn to let it go." This is easier said than done.

You do not release it, the energy of fear, because you do not trust. Your faith is hampered by doubt.

Love is letting go of fear. It is truly said that perfect love will cast out fear.

Just remember.

I read in A Course In Miracles of the lesson of specialness which as I understand it is the way that my ego wants me to see the world. That is from a point of being special in my being separate, hurt, not deserving, deserving, etc. Events of the past few days have seemed to remind me of this. It is as if I read something in A Course In Miracles or one of the other books I am working in and then can see it soon unfold in front of me.

Again, a reference to some study you are doing and have been doing for a while now. It is a good thing.

Special and specialness are terms we will use often and they refer to any form of thought that holds you as separate from Creation, God, and your brother. So specialness has to do with relationships. Thoughts which commonly indicate a perception on your part or that of a brother or sister of being separate or special include: fear, attack, superiority, inferiority, guilt, unworthiness, hostility, punishment, pain, incompleteness, hate, harm, hurt, emotional debt (either owed to you or by you), anger, indignation, and sin sense.

You are beginning to see the workings of the classroom you are in. And you have indeed been given opportunity to see the lesson of specialness. You have seen it in your brother and in yourself. Now learn and practice it, this lesson of specialness, every day. Do not see the body. See only Christ for that is all that is there. That is your holy instant. Make it child's play. Play in Me. Laugh, dance, sing, and play. Transform the battleground into the playground.

Another attack from the brother has occurred and it precipitated a strong reaction of fear in me. However, during the fear episode I was able at least for a few minutes to try and recognize it but, did not seem to have much success. I had known that the meeting would occur and had expected a different outcome.

The field of fear was strong. You are sensitive to it in others as part of your learning to recognize it and deal with it in yourself. Not everyone is so sensitive. It varies with many factors in each person. You are growing more sensitive to it and can use this awareness as a point of knowing with which to trigger your deliberate and conscious seeing of the path of higher consciousness as well as the impetus, the need, to grow onto and into that path. The lessons will come because you have asked for them. They will come because you are ready for them. They will come so as to teach you how to then teach others the way out of their own fear.

These lessons are your own seeing of the two faces of Shiva. As you have often shared with others, the Hindu God Shiva is of two countenances, the destroyer and the restorer. Following the fearsome face of the destroyer is seen the benevolent or angel face of the restorer. Destruction of old forms is necessary to progress on the Spiritual path. New wine must have new bottles.

Given that it did not go as you expected, you can see the need to let go of preconception of what's to come. Your insight into what and how to treat and learn from your brother's sense of specialness and the behavior that manifests from that sense is but your own such behavior being reflected back to you.

You were given to first love your brother, this brother especially, so that when the rejection came you could respond with that knowledge of that love already in your heart and thus start from the perspective of such love. This you have not done in the past when you have reacted from specialness in other relationships and the result was attack by you as you made what the little ego justifies as a rational self-defense. This is in reality an attack; hence your conflict. It is from the old response pattern. Learn the new. Learn this now. It will move you far.

There is a temple you must enter with your brother. His companionship and unity with you is your key. It is a package deal.

You are blocked. Your instrument needs rest. Rest is not something that you take off and do. It is something that you do moment to moment in the light of your Soul. You get rest by detachment. You rest even in the storm because you can see that there is no storm. You do not need struggle or defense and all the effort that implies because you know there is only the peace of God. You literally come to rest there and with that perspective you are not ever unrested unless you have become unseated. If so, peace, the natural state of the Soul in which rest is the natural result, will have been wrested from you.

How much of my discomfort was diet related?

You have come far in recognizing this connection and are encouraged to continue your discipline in this area. Some of your discomfort was so related in that your physical vehicle can respond better to your higher direction when it is in better shape and better fueled.

However, you must recognize that the battle between the personality (little ego) and the Soul is joined. Indeed, this is the point of this journal.

It is this battle that characterizes most of humanity today and is reflected on the Earth as conflict at all levels that appears every day to grow more ubiquitous and disturbing to more of you. Indeed, it is in its becoming more disturbing to more and more of you that there exists the hope and promise of the great awakening. It is this threshold which is seen by the little ego as storm tossed and increasingly frightening and that you have arrived at as a developing humanity. Thus, the very elements are in chaos because they reflect your connectedness to the lower Kingdoms and thus, is the battle joined.

This is the life to make much progress on surrender to your Soul.

This writing and others to follow will be a byproduct of this tug of war; hence, the need to detach and not care. You can't lose what is not real. Your fear of loss is that of the lower recognizing that it's being called to surrender and give up its specialness.

You do not yet see or really know—even though some taste has been given—what you gain, what you already are. When you know and allow yourself to let go into the light of your Soul, you will wonder why you ever had any fear. You will find the very peace that your personality now only thinks it has but in reality can never have as it is based on the dream/illusion of separateness.

The shortest way is through truth, the easiest way is to see the battleground no longer. See the playground. Play, step into the flow. Be the flow. You are the flow. Teach this and be free.

I now seem to be past a period of turmoil and am trying to see this time and its events in this new perspective.

"See" is the operative word. It is how you see that determines your world and your progress.

Given that you are more centered again, it is appropriate that you ask for information and guidance.

Why can I not just do it? Just take it all in one step and be done?

You can.

Trust.

Continue to respect the law of silence. It is this law that says that you must first do no harm in thought, word or deed. You are tempted to speak of things very personally Spiritual at the early stage of this dialogue and in doing so could actually create difficulty for some around you who are not yet ready.

Some time ago, following a Spiritually tumultuous period when I began to get the idea of finally asking, demanding to hear Your voice, a brother helped with some ideas he said were to give me guidance. They involved what he said was my power to empower which I know now all of us have. It also involved finding and connecting to my group. This was very powerful for me at the time and led to my being open to Your voice when I asked for the 800 number.

Who are/is my group? Will this be a new field of service? How can I get in touch with the power to empower and use it constructively? This memory has come to me also after a very difficult couple of weeks where attacks by the once very trusted brother have put me way off center again and into fear.

You already are in touch with the power. Keep on. To do so consciously is the goal. Stay connected.

The fear and worry of the last two weeks is and has been a lesson. It was part nutrition and body issues.

See in your brother only Christ. See in yourself only Christ.

The group will come. You will be ready. I will be with you. Take your learning steps now so that when the time comes you too will be ready.

I also realize that this has been such an easy natural thing, this just being with you and talking with you, that it has only now occurred to me to ask for more specifics about who or what you are. How is it that this is happening and is possible?

I have been waiting for you to ask and thought you never would. I am with you always. I am here always. Your Holy Spirit, your very Self, the one that you already are and you may speak to Me at any moment and hear Me at any time. You have only to ask. I am your boon companion who never sleeps but is there. Do not think there are gaps in My being with you—only in your ability to stay connected.

Ever and always and now, I am with you. Take comfort in that. Yes, the Master has touched you and will again. Your Master may come and go as needed and His wisdom requires, but His focus elsewhere does not mean that I am not here. The vehicle, the framework, the mechanism for that contact is through Me, your own personal Holy Spirit. And I am of the same for all your brothers and sisters. They too have a personal Holy Spirit and We are One.

"You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply." I tell you this. All will yet be well. Go and be blessed for I go with you always, even unto the ends of the Earth. Even unto the end and beyond this physical body. It is I whom you meet at the end of the tunnel of light. We will hug as before and as we can now do any day at any time. Just ask. Also know that to love your brother to reach out to him in any way is to reach out to Me. We are One.

You have new directions—stay with them. You have been told to laugh. Let it out. You have seen it in others. Appreciate it also in yourself.
