'There are so many minor senses, all running like tributaries into the mainstream of sex, nourishing it. Only the united beat of sex and heart together can create ecstasy.' These exquisitely sensual stories, peopled with prostitutes, aristocracy, artists, mistresses and lovers, unfold against the opulent decadence of Bohemian Paris. Profoundly erotic, they depict a world where passion may be satisfied in any number of ways and the only limits to pleasure are the boundaries of the imagination. In her attention to detail, to the look, sound and taste of all she describes, Anais Nin truly created her own 'language of the senses' when she wrote Delta of Venus.

Anais Nin was born in Paris and spent her childhood in various parts of Europe. After her father left her mother for another woman, which shocked Anais profoundly, the family moved to America. She moved back to Paris with her husband, where she lived from 1924 to 1929. Her works include many novels, short stories, poems, novellas and her diaries. Her books have been translated into 26 languages. Anais Nin died in Los Angeles in 1977.
