Paperback. "A Definition of Social Work" by Alice S. Cheyney is a seminal theoretical exploration into the professionalization and conceptual boundaries of social service at a pivotal moment in its history. This work seeks to establish a clear, academic, and practical framework for what constitutes social work, distinguishing it from general neighborliness or unorganized charity. Cheyney examines the evolving role of the social worker, the integration of scientific methods into social reform, and the fundamental objectives that drive social welfare initiatives. The text provides a deep dive into the ethics and methodologies that define the field, offering insights into the transition from private philanthropy to a structured profession. It addresses the relationship between the individual, the community, and the systemic forces that necessitate social intervention. By analyzing the functions and values of the discipline, "A Definition of Social Work" remains an essential historical resource for students of sociology and social history, as well as professionals seeking to understand the roots of contemporary social services. This analytical study serves as both a historical snapshot of the early 20th-century reform movement and a foundational text for the philosophy of public welfare. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
