Three thousand years ago, in the ancient land of Huaxia, Yiyao was betrayed by the man she loved and transformed into something feared and cursed. Cast out by her family and hunted by guilt, she wandered the earth for millennia until an encounter with a Carpenter in Israel offered her the impossible: forgiveness, and a purpose that could outlast eternity.
Now she lives in the shadows of modern Arizona, hiding what she is. But the past has a way of finding the living.
Alexander Wren was born with psychic gifts he never asked for, powers as dangerous as they are rare. Once an investigator. Now a recluse. When fate pulls him into Yiyao's orbit, something long buried stirs in both of them, and something ancient takes notice.
When an attempted kidnapping throws them before the Court, a hidden tribunal that governs vampires and psychics with ruthless authority, they find themselves hunted by Min, a sadistic vampire newly unleashed, and entangled in a conspiracy reaching back to a terror older than either of them: the Ones Who Laugh.
To survive, Alexander and Yiyao must fight not just for justice, but for each other, and for the redemption neither believed they deserved.
