Paperback. The Temporal Witnesses Volume 1: Dawn of Civilizations Three cities on three continents, and nobody in any of them had ever heard of the others. A school board votes four to three to pull the archaeology out of every classroom in the district. Cuchu Ramirez, a Mexican-American junior in Seattle, shouts at them from the floor and gets a security guard walking up the aisle for it. Matias Kim, who calls all of this dead people's problems, changes his mind a day later when he reads the proposed standards and finds Korean printing cut to one sentence. The money behind the vote belongs to the Patrimony Foundation 2.0. Then their teacher opens three boxes that were supposed to go back to the museum, and the two of them are holding a clay figurine, a carved stone bead and a clay tablet at the same moment.Three Civilizations. Forty-Eight Hours. Nothing Comes Home. CARAL, PERU (2600 BCE): Three thousand people in a planned city in an irrigated desert valley, six stepped pyramids, cotton and squash on terraces above the river. Every morning the water is argued out loud in a circle, and the circle stops and waits while somebody goes to find the families who are not there. No weapons anywhere, and no wall. WATSON BRAKE, LOUISIANA (3400 BCE): Eleven earthen mounds and a ridge enclosing a thousand feet of open ground, raised basket by basket by people who farmed nothing and wrote nothing, over four hundred years. Everything laid out on the mats at the autumn gathering came from within a few days' walk. One man keeps count of who carried and who did not, and nobody in that ring can overrule him. URUK, MESOPOTAMIA (3200 BCE): Tens of thousands of people, temple platforms going up in stages, and apprentice scribes working out how to hold a promise in clay. A young record-keeper shows Cuchu a tablet that says a man brought in eleven measures of barley. Then he tells her, without being asked, whose names are in none of the tablets in the room. Forty-eight hours there is forty-eight minutes in the storage closet. Everything they carry fades on the way home, the phone, the gift pressed into Cuchu's hand at the gate, all of it. What comes back is what they saw. Dr. Sarah Crow Feather tells them the price before they go. Anybody can travel and look. A witness is the one who has to stand up afterwards, in a room like the one they sat in, and account for it. Perfect for fans of: Elizabeth Wein's young people under political pressure, Octavia Butler's time travel, and anyone who has ever wondered which paragraph their textbook decided a civilization was worth.
