"The Dark Breed, a Book of Poems" is a compelling collection of verse that captures the raw, mystical essence of the Irish landscape and its people. Written by F. R. Higgins, a prominent figure in the Irish Literary Revival, this work explores the deep-rooted traditions, folklore, and rural realities of early 20th-century Ireland. The poems are characterized by their rhythmic vigor and rich, sensory language, reflecting Higgins' mastery of the lyric form and his deep connection to the oral traditions of his homeland.

Throughout the collection, the author delves into themes of ancestral heritage and the rugged beauty of the Connacht countryside. By blending traditional Irish rhythms with modern poetic sensibilities, Higgins crafts a vivid portrait of a nation in spiritual and cultural transition. The "dark breed" of the title refers to the resilient, earth-bound characters who inhabit these verses, from wandering musicians to laborers, all tied inextricably to the soil and the ancient myths of their ancestors.

This volume stands as a significant contribution to Irish literature, offering readers a window into the soul of the Gaelic tradition as viewed through a early twentieth-century lens. "The Dark Breed, a Book of Poems" remains an essential read for those interested in the evolution of Irish poetry and the enduring power of rural storytelling.
