Dombey and Son is a novel by English author Charles Dickens. It follows the fortunes of a shipping firm owner, who is frustrated at the lack of a son to follow him in his footsteps; he initially rejects his daughter's love before eventually becoming reconciled with her before his death. The story features many Dickensian themes, such as arranged marriages, child cruelty, betrayal, deceit, and relations between people from different British social classes. The novel was first published in monthly parts between 1846 and 1848, with illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 ? 9 June 1870) was an English novelist and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters, and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and scratched, some light shelf wear, corners are gently bumped and rubbed, overall a very crisp and clean used copy! Extremely tight binding. Wonderfully well-preserved! Very very rare and hard-to-find! Half-Leather (spine and corners) with green marbled boards and gilt lettering on the spine. Gilt upper outer page edges as well. Green marbled endpapers. Extremely scarce. No publishers date (looks to be late 19th century). One of sixteen very rare volumes. Exceptionally well-cared for. This volume contains 704 unmarked and uncreased historical pages nicely enhanced by historic black and white illustrations. Beautifully done. "I make so bold as to believe that the faculty (or the habit) of correctly observing the characters of men, is a rare one. I have not even found, within my experience, that the faculty (or the habit) of correctly observing so much as the faces of men, is a general one by any means. The two commonest mistakes in judgment that I suppose to arise from the former default, are, the confounding of shyness with arrogance ---- a very common mistake indeed ---- and the not understanding that an obstinate nature exists in a perpetual struggle with itself." ---- from the Preface. Blue cloth bindings with "The [Dickens's signature] Edition" in gilt on front board, gilt titling on spine. Full page illustrated plates by Cruikshank, Leech, Phiz, and others (16 in the Christmas Books/Boz vol., 10 in three others, eight in the rest). All volumes in good condition. A few partial separations/gaps between signature, but bindings on the whole are firm and fully intact; gilt titling/decoration remains bright and bold; light to moderate amount of wear to edges of boards, some fraying of cloth at spine ends; very faint dust smudging to cloth, some very minor toning to spines. Nineteen volumes. 8vo. Uniformly bound in contemporary red half morocco over green cloth boards, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered direct to two panels, the other compartments with a gilt flower device, marbled endpapers. Numerous plates and illustrations in the text throughout by the likes of Cruikshank, Phiz etc., as per earlier editions. Uneven fading and marking to spines plus some general rubbing. An undated edition, likely stereotyped from previous editions, the bindings would appear to be from the either the 1880s and 1890s.
