Custer Went First. Based on soldier and Indian survivor accounts, much of the Battle of the Little Bighorn occurred while Custer was incapacitated. This book explores the battle with a different approach and perspective. The author uses Army reports, official Army testimonies, Indian recollections, and on-site evaluations and photos by the author to describe the battle. Custer did have a battle plan. Custer was implementing that attack plan when he was shot early in the battle. Subordinate officers made key decisions that ultimately ended in the annihilation of five companies of the Seventh Cavalry. This book is an important read to fully understand the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
