This dissertation evaluates the impact of electronic commerce on the German insurance industry with the overall goal of creating competitive advantage. The dissertation proceeds by reviewing the literature for definitions and perspectives of electronic commerce, the suitability of electronic commerce for insurance products and services, the impact on existing business processes and value chains as well as the sources for creating competitive advantage within a mature insurance industry. Additionally, its organizational implications have also been examined. This dissertation contains fieldwork on the issues focused on in theory. Primary data was gathered using a questionnaire and a few interviews that were conducted with Chief Information Officers (CIO). The results of these activities were analysed and discussed by comparing them with both theory and experiences of other industries.Inhaltsverzeichnis:Table of Contents:Abstract11.Introduction21.1Objectives21.2Approach32.Hypothesis and Objectives43.The German insurance industry53.1Status quo53.2Future trends74.Literature review104.1E-Commerce - characteristics and perspectives104.2Insurance products and services in electronic commerce144.3Electronic commerce and the value chain174.4Competitive advantage204.5Business processes within the insurance industry264.6Organisational implications for electronic commerce314.7Success factors for Electronic commerce344.8Summary of literature research355.Fieldwork395.1Research and objectives395.2Methodology and scope - outline395.3Questionnaire on e-commerce405.4Interviews with CIO S415.5Limitations of the research416.Findings and analysis of Fieldwork Data426.1General findings426.2Future industry trends446.3Consumer profiles, expectations and behaviour476.4Products and services506.5Value chain and competitive advantage536.6Business processes596.7Focused areas636.8Constraints646.9Summary of fieldwork667.Conclusions677.1Conclusions drawn from the literature677.2Conclusions drawn from the fieldwork687.3Final conclusions-correlations between the literature and fieldwork698.Recommendations709.Appendices739.1Appendix 1739.2Appendix 2749.3Appendix 3: Questionnaire759.4Appendix 4: Interview guide809.5Appendix 58310.Bibliography84.…
