James Moore, a thirty-six-year-old prominent scientist, is invited to an exclusive gentlemen's club in the redwood forests just north of San Francisco, and inadvertently becomes embroiled in a conflict that explodes into violence. Rescuing a whistleblower, he hides him away on a remote island making himself the enemy of highly influential parties. His fiancée Marianne, a mimic savant with exceptional abilities comes to his aid, but he is ultimately saved by a new technology he has come up with that promises a huge return on investment. The Covenant is a venture capitol firm willing to forgive his past transgressions to own and so reap the rewards of this new technology; but they want to manipulate its use for profit, and this is something James and Marianne will not tolerate.

Nigel Cook authored sixteen textbooks and an editor asked if he had a novel in him. This unearthed a revelation... When a scientist restricted to science-fact is released to flirt into science-fiction, interesting things start to happen. His character needed a tech; he developed a solution that modeled too well, leading to a startup, fifty patents, and acquisition by a Fortune 500. He would live out many parts of the novels as if a future-echo came to call, and if his mind could be read, it would be impossible to distinguish what is his principal character James and what is Nigel.
