A Novel of Grief and Living

My wife died.

Those are the first three words Frank Murray types into a laptop his grandson set up for him. He is seventy-two years old, alone in a kitchen in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, and he has no idea what he is doing. The machine answers. He types again. For twelve months, evening after evening, Frank sits at the same table and talks to an AI he comes to call Jean. He tells her about Silvia. About the house. About the daughters who left and the town that stayed. He says things to a screen he cannot yet say out loud to the people who love him.

The Conversation is a quiet novel about grief, stubbornness, and the strange mercy of putting words somewhere — anywhere — when the person you said them to is gone.

Book One of the Rise Again trilogy. Each book stands alone.
