Paperback. "The Contemporary Jew in the Elizabethan Drama" is an insightful scholarly exploration into the depiction of Jewish characters within the landscape of English Renaissance theatre. Author Jacob Lopes Cardozo meticulously examines the historical and literary forces that influenced the creation of figures such as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" and Barabas in "The Jew of Malta." The work addresses a central question of literary history: whether these portrayals were informed by real-world encounters with Jewish individuals in Elizabethan England or were predominantly shaped by inherited medieval myths and religious stereotypes.Through a comprehensive analysis of plays and contemporary documents, Cardozo explores the intersection of social reality and dramatic artifice. He highlights how the playwrights of the era navigated the cultural and religious tensions of their time to create some of the most enduring and controversial figures in the Western canon. This study serves as a vital resource for understanding the complexities of identity and representation on the early modern stage, offering deep historical context for students of Shakespeare, drama, and Jewish history. Cardozo's work remains a cornerstone for those researching the evolution of the Jew as a literary archetype during one of the most transformative periods in English literature. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
