Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1977) by Robert Venturi is one of the most influential books in twentieth-century architectural criticism and theory. Published by The Museum of Modern Art, this edition presents Venturi's groundbreaking argument for a more complex and inclusive approach to architecture. Originally published in 1966, Venturi challenged the simplicity and rigid functionalism associated with modernist architecture. Drawing on historical buildings as well as contemporary examples, he argued for an architecture that could accommodate contradiction, ambiguity, complexity, ornament, and multiple meanings.
