What Is a Dove?
Doves are small to medium-sized birds belonging to the family Columbidae, which also includes pigeons. Although the terms dove and pigeon are often used interchangeably, there is no strict scientific distinction between them. Generally, smaller and more graceful members of the family are called doves, while larger species are often referred to as pigeons.
Doves are found on every continent except Antarctica and have adapted to a wide variety of environments, including forests, deserts, grasslands, wetlands, farms, and cities. Their gentle appearance, soft cooing calls, and peaceful behavior have made them beloved companions for thousands of years.
Physically, doves typically have:
- Compact, streamlined bodies

History of Doves and Their Relationship with Humans
The relationship between humans and doves stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that people domesticated certain members of the Columbidae family over 5,000 years ago. Throughout history, pigeons and doves also served practical purposes. Messenger pigeons carried military and personal communications over long distances long before modern communication systems existed. Their reliability made them invaluable during wars, trade, and diplomacy.
Today, domestic doves are kept primarily as:
- Companion pets
- Aviary birds
- Exhibition birds
- Breeding stock
- Educational animals
- Symbols released during weddings, memorials, and special ceremonies
