The Languages of Humanity
"To learn another language is to gain another window through which to view the world."

One Humanity, Thousands of Voices
Imagine standing on a mountain high above the Earth.
Below you are billions of people.
Different nations.
Different cultures.
Different traditions.
Different histories.
Different beliefs.
And thousands of different languages.
Yet every one of those people laughs.
Every one of those people cries.
Every one of those people hopes.
Every one of those people loves.
This presents one of the great paradoxes of humanity.
We are one species.
Yet we speak thousands of languages.
We are united biologically.
Yet divided linguistically.
How did this happen?
And what does it teach us about communication itself?

The First Human Languages
No one knows exactly when the first true human language emerged.
Scientists estimate that spoken language may have begun somewhere between 50,000 and 300,000 years ago.
Long before cities.
Long before writing.
Long before agriculture.
Ancient humans gathered around campfires.
Shared stories.
Passed on survival knowledge.
Warned about dangers.
Taught children.
Organized hunts.
Language became humanity's greatest survival tool.
A tribe that communicated effectively often survived better than one that did not.
Language allowed knowledge to accumulate.
Each generation could begin where the previous generation ended.
Civilization itself became possible.

The Explosion of Languages
As humans migrated across the Earth, groups became separated.
Mountains.
Oceans.
Deserts.
Forests.
Thousands of years passed.
Languages evolved.
Words changed.
Grammar shifted.
Pronunciations drifted.
Eventually entirely new languages emerged.
What began as one ancestral language may have diversified into thousands.
Today linguists estimate that humanity speaks roughly 7,000 languages.
Many are thriving.
